Nathan Hickey, '18, selected by Red Sox in 5th Round Draft Pick
Providence Alumni and former catcher Nathan Hickey, Class of 2018, became the first Northeast Florida player off the board for 2021, leading the list of locals this past Monday on the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The Boston Red Sox selected Hickey, a sophomore at Florida, in the fifth round with the 136th pick overall.
Hickey, a draft-eligible sophomore, went undrafted out of Providence High School. He joined second-round pick Jud Fabian in Gainesville and went on a tear to start the 2020 season, hitting .311/.439/.622 in that abbreviated campaign. He continued to mash upon his return to campus, hitting .317/.435/.522 in 2021 with 15 doubles, nine homers, 42 walks, and just 40 strikeouts.
Providence is proud of you, Nathan!
